U.S. Rep. Billy Long received honors from the National Association of Manufacturers on Thursday after a tour of a Leggett & Platt operation in Carthage.

Karl Glassman, president of the Carthage-based firm, presented the association's award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence to recognize his voting record in the 113th Congress.

Glassman noted that Long had a 100 percent voting record on issues of concern to manufacturers in that Congress, and that he had been honored by NAM earlier for his voting record in the the 112th Congress. NAM is the nation's largest manufacturing association representing large and small manufacturers in all 50 states.

"This represents his votes on 29 measures involving small business, energy and other disparate issues, and he voted with manufacturers every time," Glass said of Long. "We thank you for that."

Long noted his stop at the Carthage plant was part of an annual tour of manufacturers in the 7th District to emphasize their importance to the region.

"These tours are important to me because they're so educational; I learn a lot," Long said. "I always say if you take agriculture and manufacturing out of the 7th District, you're not going to have much left."

He said he also relies on local business officials to contact his office with their concerns so he can better represent them in Washington.

He said he currently is among legislators fighting the battle against illegal dumping by foreign manufacturers that are competitors to U.S. businesses.

"We've got to keep it free and fair," he said.
