State and national officials will speak at the annual Lincoln Days banquet set for Saturday, Feb. 28, in Joplin.

The featured speaker at the event will be Joshua Hawley, who announced last week that he is considering a run for the Republican nomination for attorney general. State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, also has declared his candidacy for the post.

Hawley, a law professor at the University of Missouri, was involved in the representation of the Hobby Lobby corporation before the U.S. Supreme Court in its successful challenge of elements of the federal Affordable Care Act. He has been a frequent speaker at Republican gatherings across the state and in the region, most recently the regional Pachyderm Club last month in Neosho. He also is founder of the Missouri Liberty Project, which, according to the group's web page, aims to protect religious liberty, fight federal overreach, defend Missouri agriculture and rebuild citizen democracy.

Other featured speakers announced last week will include state Auditor Tom Schweich, one of two declared GOP candidates for governor; Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder; and U.S. Rep. Billy Long.

The event will be held at the Butcher Block Banquet Center, 499 W. Fountain Road. A social hour will start at 6 p.m. and the program at 6:15 p.m. Tickets, at $35 each, can be purchased from Nick Myers, 5031 S. Range Line, 623-2214; Software Center, 2604 E. Seventh St., 624-3844; Gina Rodriquez, 825-4825; or on the Jasper County or Newton County Republican Party websites.

McDonald County event

Republicans in McDonald County will gather for a Lincoln Days banquet on the same day as the Jasper-Newton County event, but at noon at the River Ranch in Noel.

Former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway will be the keynote speaker. This is the first time for a McDonald County Lincoln Day event, according to Jane Lant, one of the organizers. Tickets, at $15, are available by calling Lant at 529-3015.
