SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- American Legion Post 639 announced Tuesday it plans to bring the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall to Springfield to coincide with the war's 50th anniversary in 2015.
"This is extremely important because it gives them a chance to go up to touch the wall and look up the names of their relatives that were killed," Post 639 member Allen Hines said.
U.S. Rep. Billy Long was on hand Tuesday to thank Post 639 for its plan to bring the traveling wall to its Scenic Ave. location on July 9.
"You can't adequately thank the troops but, just because you can't adequately thank the troops doesn't mean we shouldn't try," Long said.
The wall will be on display for three days in conjunction with the American Legion State Convention, which will be held in Springfield at the same time.
The temporary wall will join a new permanent memorial, which will be built as a fundraising effort and as a lasting honor to all Ozarks veterans.
The Veterans Memorial of the Ozarks will feature a pentagon platform and statue that commemorates all five branches of the military. Post 639 us currently accepting donations for special brick pavers that will each honor a veteran by name.
