A Republic native spent her summer serving Missouri’s Seventh Congressional District as an intern in Congressman Billy Long’s Washington, D.C., office.

Julie Nelson, a 2013 Republic High School graduate and current Baylor University junior, finished her internship in Long’s office on Friday, July 31. Nelson arrived on Capitol Hill in late May and had a front row seat to the federal legislative process through attending briefings, supporting staff with legislative research and providing constituent service.

“My favorite thing has been being able to see up close what I spend a lot of time studying and reading about, especially the committee process,” Nelson said. “I’m always reading press releases and news stories, so it has been really great to be on the other side of things — writing about and seeing what happens before I would be reading about it.”

Long commended Nelson on her summer of service in Washington: “I thank Julie for her hard work here in D.C.,” Long said. “She was very helpful in conducting our operations and carried out every task she had with precision, care and a smile. It was great to have another face of the District in my office and bring another fresh, Ozarks perspective to Congress. I and my staff wish Julie all the best in her future endeavors.”

Nelson was born and raised in Republic. She maintains a 4.0 GPA as an economics and political science double major at Baylor, and she works as a research assistant regarding the operation of the courts and constitutional issues. She is a member of the Honors College, competes on the University’s Moot Court team and serves the University as a new student mentor and Baylor Ambassador. Nelson’s post-graduate plans include attending law school to study constitutional and appellate law.

Long has open full-time and part-time internship opportunities in his Washington, D.C.; Springfield; and Joplin offices. Priority is given to Seventh District constituents. Interested college undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. For more information, call Long’s D.C. office at (202) 225-6536, or in Springfield at 889-1800.
